The Conservation Burial Ground becomes a reality at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. The Honey Creek Woodlands Burial Ground at the Monastery was officially launched on Tuesday April 22nd 2008 celebrating Earth Day. It offers the opportunity to purchase natural burial spaces at the monastery. The burial ground is nestled into more than 500 acres permanently protected wetlands and wooded streams. It is a quiet and beautiful resting place for people of all faiths, as well s those who have struggled to find faith. Go to the website

Brother Callistus Crichlow professes Final Vows promising to stay at his chosen monastery for his lifetime. The simple, joy-filled Mass brought together all the monks from the monastery, as well as a dozen or so members of Brother Callistus’ family from his native land Trinidad, to celebrate this joyous occasion. Father Joseph Tynan, died at age 88 on Thursday, February 22, 2007, in the monastery infirmary. He entered the Gethsemani Abbey (Kentucky), and made solemn vows on March 19, 1944. On that same day, the abbot named 20 monks to begin a new monastery in Conyers, Georgia. A year later, Joseph joined the group in Georgia where he would remain until his death. Father Robert (Bob) Pearson, Dies at age 85. Father Bob contributed to the construction of the current monastery, completed in 1960, by offering architectural suggestions. His service to the monastic community included retreat master, novice master, as well as, landscaping the retreat house meditation garden and the cloister garden. For years Father Bob made pottery, and in 1969 he began making sand casting designs. His work is still available in the monastery’s Abbey Store. Father Robert Pierson (February 16, 2007) |

Brother Louis Paul professes solemn vows. After years of detours and preparation, Brother Louis takes his solemn vows. Originally from Philadelphia, he majored in business in college and is a gifted organist. Brother Louis’ family was here to celebrate this beautiful ceremony with him. |

Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area becomes a reality. After many years of meetings, negotiations and dialogues, President Bush signed into law the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Over 7,000 acres of public and private lands create this green space protecting natural and cultural resources, including the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. |

Father Manuel Rodriguez, OCSO, 75, died on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at a hospital in Venezuela from complications of pneumonia. Father Manuel, who entered Our Lady of the Holy Spirit in 1953, was one of seven monks sent to establish a monastery in Venezuela on September 11, 1987. Plein Air Painters of Georgia come to the monastery to capture nature and monks in their art work. Paintings were on display in the Welcome Center giving the public an opportunity to purchase these one of a kind paintings. |

Fr. Damian Turk died a few minutes before midnight on Tuesday, April 25th, just shy of his 81st birthday. Father Damian was accepted into the monastic community on August 12, 1958, and served at the monastery for 48 years. He played a major role in the construction years. Brother Guerric professes his solemn vows. A native of Connecticut, he pursued a religious vocation in his teen years with the LaSalette Missionaries, and later with the Franciscans. It was the Cistercian Trappist way of life, however, that captured his heart. |

Brother Patrick Christle receives the novice habit. Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, he spent two years in the Marines, then to academic life obtaining a BS in Philosophy and a PhD in English, before finally arriving at the monastery. |

Brother Augustine makes his Solemn Profession. Brother Augustine’s journey began on the south side of Chicago, took a detour to Stone Mountain, GA, and finally came to fulfillment at the monastery in Conyers where he now serves. |

Fr. Lawrence Swartz, OCSO, the tall, stalwart Texan who entered Gethsemani Abbey in 1926 at 19 years of age, died peacefully in the Lord in the infirmary of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery. He was 98 years of age. Father Lawrence Swartz (September 26, 2005)

One of the monastery’s pioneers in 1944, Father Charles Zell, O.C.S.O. died early in the morning in the monastery infirmary. Considered one of the pioneer members of the monastery, Father Charles arrived at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery on April 17, 1944, only three days after making simple monastic vows at Gethsemani Abbey (Kentucky). Abbot M. Basil Pennington, sixth abbot of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery died on Friday, June 3, from injuries sustained from a car wreck on Tuesday, March 29. He was elected as abbot of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery on August 4, 2000. Father Basil served the community of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery for two years. On April 20, 2002, he presented his resignation and returned to St. Joseph’s Abbey where he entered in 1951.
