Christmas Concert at the Monastery
The Atlanta Boy Choir’s annual concert in the Abbey Church of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit is a tradition many count on to help them prepare for the coming of Christmas. Since the setting is both festive and sacred, the words of the hymns and carols sung here seem more wondrous and often resonate in a way far deeper than is possible in another place. The voices fill the arched sanctuary with a joyous sound where it was meant to be heard anticipating the birth of the Savior.
Monastery of the Holy Spirit is pleased to present the Annual Christmas concert welcoming the joyous holiday season. Music Director Dr. Robert Henry has put together a beautiful and unique program.
In our fortieth year of presenting these special Christmas concerts, we again welcome this joyous Christmas Season with another special performance. The Director, Robert Henry, D.M.A., presents the welcome collaboration of some of the Atlanta Boy Choir and its Men’s Alumni Chorus. The men's choir adding a powerful sound to the program. The program also includes a small chamber group (SATB), plus featured Artists-in-Residence singers, and a special piano recital by Director Dr. Robert Henry, a renowned concert pianist. We will hear Classical compositions along with traditional carols, spirituals, and Latin hymns. Accompanied by harp, flute, oboe, violin, cello, piano, and harpsichord, the concert invites the audience to listen to crisp notes and beautiful voices. This unique and hallowed space at the monastery with its grand acoustics of the Norman Gothic architecture has been a special place for the thousands of alumni - boys who have gone through the choirs ranks over the years.
The uniqueness of the evening, which draws many people back year after year, is its step away from all that is worldly. From the darkness of the grounds, as one enters beforehand, one is transported to a more reflective and sacred space within and without. How blessed the Christmas season seems once again, how fresh a promise to all people.
The monastery gift store has become a favorite stop for concertgoers eager to find unique Christmas gifts. This annual tradition has become the busiest day of the Christmas season with the monks manning the store. Come early and browse for your holiday gifting ideas. The store will be open both before and after the concert.
